YY2K is an artist duo comprising Hu You-Yang and Chou Chiao-Chi. Hu was born in Wuhan, an industrial city in China, in 1995, while Chou was born in a mountain area in Taiwan in 1996. Having grown up in different environments, they have acquired vastly disparate points of view on the development of mankind and environmental conservation. They decided to form Y2K in 2018, and have since endeavored to discuss the opposing relationship between man and plants, as well as to create interactive experiences driven by biological signals as a way to invite reflections.
Following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Hu began his doctoral study at the University of Tokyo in Japan to extend his knowledge in computer science. Chou also began her doctoral study at the National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan to research into plant physiology. Although geographically separated, the two artists continue to explore the impact of technology on ecological evolution as a group. Since relocating their biological hybrid experiments from indoor spaces to open nature, Y2K began to contemplate the gap between human subjective perception and the material world. For instance, their new series "Lichtung" from 2022 describes the process of "energy" transfer among matters, information, and living organisms. By analyzing the interaction within the process, Y2K investigates their doubts about ontology. |
