About Exhibition
“絲向正確” is a technical term in printing and bookbinding, referring to “Grain Direction”, the direction of paper fibers. When books are bound along the correct direction, pages flip more smoothly and the paper is less likely to warp. Phonetically, 絲向正確 echoes both 撕向正確 (“tear from the right direction,” the English exhibition title) and 思想正確 (“formal correct ”), forming a playful pun that bridges material properties and linguistic meaning. This wordplay also reflects the shared sense of humor found across the artists’ practices. As in this exhibition, their works continually explore the possibilities opened through deviation, displacement, and misalignment.

Chihoi’s oil paints from life depicted white newspapers which have been repeatedly fold and marked with creases. These materials—left over from his past project in bookmaking, an object he keeps handling in daily work. On canvas, they shift from being carriers of content to becoming subjects of observation. This linguistic play of “paper on canvas” is both a reflection on traces of past effort and an elevation of paper to a spiritual intensity akin to portraiture.

Son Ni’s practice employs abstract lines in an attempt to escape the constraints of time and space. She often develops large-scale works from multiple small sketches, striving for continuity of bodily sensation and completion— “complete one stroke as one respiration.” Under this aim, one mistake leads her to abandon the current work and start again. Yet through this process of minimal tolerance for error and relentless pursuit of perfection, she has come to realize that mistakes themselves must be embraced; the insistence on flawlessness can ultimately undermine the possibility of creation. The work “Imagine a Flaw”, presented in this exhibition, emerged from this realization.

Tsai Tsung-Yu obtained a PhD in Art creation and theory (Chinese ink-and-Bruch Painting) from the Department of Fine Arts, National Taiwan Normal University. As an interloper to this technique, he approaches ink painting with greater freedom from its conventional frameworks. In this exhibition, Tsai depicts figures immersed in water, using spray paint which imitates the ink-wash affect to convey the blurry, fluid forms beneath the surface. Through this unanticipated choice of materials, he loosens the fixed norms of traditional ink painting, revealing a distinctive style marked by both humor and experimentation.
