Chen Sung-Chih
Another Place Series - Gap
Torn Senses Chen Sung-Chih is well known for his large scale, site-specific installations, where the artist’s creative process often undergoes a ritual-like manipulation of everyday materials and objects. Chen often includes paper as a primary material in his work, tearing, folding, scrunching or scraping, producing marks and textures that form a unique aesthetic with the strong presence of the artist’s labors. Chen’s 2014 Another Place Series - Gap projects a sense of serenity, his surfaces a treated with an austere purity, punctuated with an organic, roughly formed line, made from the torn spine of an anonymous magazine. Chen is adept at taking familiar materials out of their original context, and through contrast and manipulation, creates a new visual metaphor that opens a space for alternative interpretations. His interventions are often based on our natural understanding and interaction with materials. A missing torn page from a book implies an aggressive gesture, yet the remaining spine is delicately preserved and attached to a blank canvas in a reverent manner. The absence of the noisy pages of words and glossy images that are expected from a magazine creates a silent purity that is even more absolute. The abstraction of materials reflect his observations of human behavior and experience affected by a change in perception everyday materials, awakening different sensory memories. |
