One Day Performance
One Day One day, can be both seem like an immeasurable amount of time, or an unremarkable building block that forms a bigger whole. In 2012, Luxury Logico undertook a One Day Performance at Project Fulfill Art Space, in homage to Hsieh Teh-Ching’s (Sam Hsieh) One Year Performance 1978-1979 (Cage Piece). In Hsieh’s performance, the artist, then 28, confined himself in a cage, not speaking, reading or writing; he did not listen to the radio or watch TV, for the course of one year. Spectators were allowed once every three weeks, while a loft mate brought the artist food and removed waste. Photographic documentation and a lawyer’s notarization confirmed that Hsieh did not leave the cage for a year. A photograph of the scratched line that Hsieh made to mark each passing day was produced as an edition of 365 prints. Luxury Logico purchased one of these prints, participating in the commerce of collecting artwork. This transaction allowed them to become both collector and artist, exploring the journey of an artwork from creation, to appreciation, to acquisition – and back to creation again. Inspired by Hsieh Teh-Ching’s Cage Piece, Luxury Logico created One Day Performance, in which one day was divided into 365 units, and within each unit of time they performed a set of actions, stamping and signing 365 prints while marking the time in which it was stamped. The performance and prints were produced as a ‘Calendar Book’, containing reproductions of the 365 prints, with 365 editions. Collectors are a unique existence – beyond just appreciating art, they are willing to acquire the artworks at a certain price, and thus support the careers of the artist. Through this performance and calendar book, Luxury Logico examines the cycle and commercial industry of an artwork, becoming collectors themselves as well as projecting their own questions towards collectors – do they love the works they collect? What is their point of view? The cyclic narrative of an artwork – echoes the cycle of a day or a year, unique to their time and place, each filled with the thoughts and emotions of both collector and artist. |
