The Exhibition "Yi & C." is a conceptual project with reference to the artist's own past experience, using "painting" as the expressive medium. The story is as follows:
In my senior year, I had finally made my official debut in the "Front Art" exhibition. That time, I sold all of the works on display and received my first paycheck from selling art work. A few days later, I was still in a curiously happy mood when I received a BB Call message from the buyers late at night hoping to see more of my art. I will never forget that night as I hurried back to the studio plundering through all the works that I could take with me. Seeing how I emptied all the property from my studio, the process was somewhat like fleeing. Despite the pervasive feeling of uneasiness, I still asked my classmate to drive a truck load of my works to the gallery. In the end, the buyers bought all the works being brought to them. Back then, I was just a senior student after all, and did not put too much thought on selling artworks. Although surrounded by excitement, a feeling of loss was also there in the mixture. I can still remember to this day how I felt after returning to the studio ------ looking at the empty space originally filled by artworks, a piece in my heart seemed to have been hollowed out, and then I turned to examine the first check I had received from selling works in my hands, a sense of sadness swelled up in me. It had been 12 years since the last I've seen them ------ since the night they were removed from my studio and then sold. It was not until two years ago that I chanced upon seeing part of those works once again, when the collectors requested for make-up signatures in order for the collection to be resold. Some of the others still remained in the possession of the original collectors. I've also come to understand that some were damaged during a flood ... Yu-Cheng Chou's art projects place emphasis on the procedures and operations hidden beneath the surface, especially concentrating on how to produce alternative modes of operation within an established reality. By doing so, not only are the problems underlying established facts revealed, it also in some way produces corresponding alternative interests--this process is what he calls "design scheme." In recent years, he has collaborated with private enterprises, art galleries, museums, art institutions, labor workers, writers etc. through the logic of this concept, requesting for their participation and presenting the project through diverse forms, such as installation, painting, publishing, media, and documents. 35 Visual Artist Support sponsor:【Yi&C home collection】 「易雅居 Yi&C.」
