His works on paper are based on his live performance titled _USED TO, using a drawing-like process to carve out the contours of his body and movement. Each contour capturing a fleeting moment of existence. In the work _USED TO, Chen performs a series of physically demanding positions and ritual-like movements, as the artist sits on top of a pedestal made out of a stack of paper, and proceeds to cut his body’s outline layer by layer. What is left behind is a mesmerizing contour of his body and movement, like witnessing the artist’s mental and physical meditation slowly growing into existence. Chen pushes the limits of his endurance, the performance lasting 8 hours at a time without stopping for any breaks. His strength can be said to be born out of overcoming desperation and the slow consumption of his spirit and body. As we observe the accumulation of his exhaustion, the layers of sliced paper fall away revealing the rawness of a newly emerged sculptural figure, like a body spliced through time. Through performance and object, Chen beautifully narrates the topography of the artist’s presence. “I lift the blade and slash down. My interaction with my body not only portrays a visual landscape, but also encompasses the spirituality of being a human being, how do I exist? How did I “used to” exist?” – Chen Jun-Yu |
