Project Fulfill Art Space is honored to invite renowned Japanese artist Yuko Mohri to participate in our June exhibition. Circus without Circus will be her first solo exhibition in Taiwan.
Born in Kanagawa prefecture, Japan, in 1980, Yuko Mohri now lives and works in Tokyo. By collecting everyday objects and mechanical components to transform them into new collectives, she creates artworks that radiate invisible energy such as magnetic force, gravity, light and warmth. She has flexed her artistic muscles in recent years. In addition to being the first-prize winner of the 2nd Nissan Art Award last year, she is a high profile figure who has sparked considerable discussions within international art communities and also become a regular guest of international biennials and museum exhibitions, including Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2016 in India and Roppongi Crossing 2016 held at Mori Museum in Tokyo. Her oeuvre have also been displayed in the exhibition The Way Things Go held at Taipei Fine Arts Museum, and Regeneration Movement: Rethinking Technology in the Digital Age held at National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. At first glance, the viewers may have the impression that the place they visit is a small amusement park. The entire exhibition space is covered from ceiling to floor with percussion instruments, sound devices and everyday objects, all wired together to form an unmanned, automatic band. The sounds randomly emitted from everywhere tickle the viewers’ curiosity. Yuko Mohri is keen to create the imagery of organic ecosystems. Her seemingly incoherent mechanical installations are in fact the result of an elaborate arrangement, through which she stages an extremely charming scene and explores the possibility of establishing new relations between the natural and the artificial. The title of this exhibition discloses the kernel idea of Yuko Mohri’s current creation, which is inspired by Musicircus, a piece created in 1967 by John Cage. To create this piece, Cage brought together several musicians of different genres (e.g. piano, vocal, electronic, dance, etc.) and made them perform at the same time. Although the layout of this “orchestra” was well-coordinated, the performance was, in appearance, unorganized and aimless. Yuko Mohri used to present one artwork at a time in previous exhibitions. However, in Circus without Circus, the artist takes a trot through her oeuvre. She will assemble several previous installations and establish ties among them to create a circus. It is a breakthrough of her creative pattern and a refining of her oeuvre. This solo exhibition at Project Fulfill Art Space will thus be an important challenge and a turning point for Yuko Mohri. Yuko Mohri’s first solo exhibition in Taiwan will be on view from 11 June to 17 July 2016. The opening reception is scheduled at 16:00 on 11 June when the artist will be at the scene. Besides, the Artist Talk is scheduled at 15:00 on the same day. It is our great honor to be able to invite renowned curator Takahiro Kaneshima, former Art Director of Art Fair Tokyo and current Art Director of Art Beijing. He will engage in the dialogue with Yuko Mohri to give the audience a better understanding of her works. We cordially invite you to join us at Project Fulfill Art Space for this gala event.
